Adam Thoroughgood House
Nestled near the bank of the Lynnhaven River, the Thoroughgood House was built circa 1680 and is one of the oldest brick homes in America. Its spectacular collection of late 17th- and early 18th-century English furniture and newly-restored gardens offer visitors a view of the lifestyle of a wealthy Virginia colonist. Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum
The Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum is located in a historically registered and last remaining Virginia Beach Boardwalk cottage, de Witt Cottage, which was built in 1895. The theme of the museum is two-fold: First, the preservation, promotion, perpetuation and exhibition of wildfowl artifacts and contemporary wildfowl art forms. Secondly, provide an accurate representation of the early history of Virginia Beach captured through pictures, oral reports, and the physical presence of the de Witt Cottage amidst the oceanfront. Chesapeake Bay Center
Get back to nature at this environmentally focused, interactive visitor information center in First Landing State Park. The Center showcases a historical exhibition of the first landing of settlers in 1607, aquariums, environmental exhibits, classroom space, wet lab and touch tank developed by the Virginia Marine Science Museum. Ferry Plantation House
Currently being renovated by Friends of the Ferry Plantation House, Inc. in partnership with Virginia Beach, the house soon will be an educational center open to the public. This 1830 brick ten-room central passage plan Federal farmhouse, built by slave labor, stands facing the Western Branch of the Lynnhaven River. This site also witnessed the imprisonment of Grace Sherwood from 1706-1715 in the jail. The existing Ferry Plantation House was built, in part, of bricks salvaged from the ruins. This late 18th-century plantation, home to one of Virginia Beach's prominent families, features period rooms, special exhibits and gardens, and a museum gift shop. Old Coast Guard Station
Housed in a 1903 former Life-Saving Station, the museum tells the story of the men who served in the US Life-Saving Service and the US Coast Guard. Virginia Marine Science Museum
Since it opened in 1986, the Virginia Marine Science Museum has been one of the state's most popular museums. Currently featuring more than 800,000 gallons of aquariums, the museum takes visitors on a journey of water through Virginia. Visitors can stroll through the indoor Coastal River Room where birds and turtles roam free, marvel at a 50,000-gallon aquarium with the largest collection of Chesapeake Bay fish in the world and touch gentle stingrays, horseshoe crabs and other marine life. The museum also has over 300 interactive exhibits, 1/2-acre aviary, and "larger than life" movies on an IMAX 3D movie screen.
