James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library
Monroe first practiced law in Fredericksburg in the 1780s on this site (although not in this building, which was erected about 1816 and later enlarged), and many of his possessions are preserved here. Included in the museum's collection is the desk on which he signed the document that became known as the Monroe Doctrine. This National Historic Landmark is open daily 10am - 5pm daily. Kenmore Plantation & Gardens
This National Historic Landmark is one of America's most-outstanding examples of Georgian architecture, completed about 1776 for Fielding and Betty Washington Lewis (George Washington's only sister, whom he often visited here). Inside the austere brick exterior is an exceptionally elaborate interior with many rare furnishings and the finest 18th-century decorative plasterwork in the country. National Bank Museum
Located in one of the oldest buildings in America continuously serving as a bank, a museum houses objects reflecting the history of the city's prosperity and challenges. Erected about 1819 as the Farmer's Bank of Virginia, this fine Federal structure served as Union headquarters during the Civil War occupation of Fredericksburg. Rising Sun Tavern
This National Historic Landmark was built as a residence by George Washington's younger brother, Charles, in the 1760s. In 1792 John Frazier converted the house into a tavern called the Golden Eagle; it operated until 1823. It acquired its present name some years later, when a sign for the Rising Sun Tavern (another local inn) was mistakenly ascribed to the former Golden Eagle.
